Chapter 47

FBI Special Agent Stacy Workman stood beneath the Sevillita archway dressed in a comfortable pair of sweats and a black T-shirt. She still wore her service pistol on her hip, and she had a flashlight in one hand, but other than that, she looked like a civilian on a night jog through the refuge.

Stacy took note of the fact that while the lights were still on in the booth, there was no one manning it. Her eyes moved to the camera next, wondering if Ian had ever gotten around to fixing it after being publicly berated by Lance.

She thought not.

As the minutes ticked by, Stacy found her gaze drifting higher still, eventually focusing on the night sky. Light pollution from the city was minimal at Sevillita, and yet it wasn’t oppressively dark out. The stars provided a kaleidoscope of illumination, like droplets of chilled milk on a dark chocolate brownie.

Eventually, Stacy grew tired of the celestial poetry and pulled out her cell phone.

Her upper lip curled in disappointment.

There were still no messages from Stitts.

“Eleven,” she said to herself. “I’m sure we agreed on eleven.”

It was coming up on midnight now.

In addition to having a reputation as being one hell of an Agent, Stitts was also notoriously punctual, the present case notwithstanding.

Stacy had joined the Bureau just a few months before Stitts and had followed his career closely, mostly because he’d accelerated up the ranks much faster than she had.

It wasn’t an ego thing, but more of an exploratory exercise: it seemed implausible for an ex-real estate agent to continue to receive higher and higher profile cases while she, an ex-cop with a history of success, struggled to receive anything of note.

This was also part of the reason why she’d been sure to sidle up next to the man every chance she got.

The other reason was purely physical. Stitts was, after all, ruggedly handsome. And if he ever quit smoking, he’d be near perfect.

Stacy had been hesitant to be too forward at first, however, as she didn’t want to step on Agent Adams’s toes. Crossing the feisty brunette was a surefire way to either get smacked or to pump the brakes on any career aspirations she might have had.

If Stitts’s rise had been meteoric, Chase’s was an Elon Musk experiment to circumvent the speed of light.

Like any other office place, rumors spread through the FBI, and Quantico in particular. The prevailing refrain was that Chase and Stitts were sleeping together and had been for some time.

But after what Stacy had seen here at Sevillita and then again at the station?

The honeymoon, if there had ever been one, was most definitely over.

“Come on, Stitts, where are you?”

When there still was no sign of a car approaching, Stacy fired off another text, then immediately cringed.

Really, Stacy? I really hope you can still make it?

She shook her head.

Desperate much?

What she’d told Stitts hadn’t been a lame attempt to get the man alone. She really did like to try and recreate the scene of a crime, especially a confusing and complicated one such as this.
